In the raw format, Ecklonia maxima is collected in the sea. Fishermen brave the elements off shore and harvest the fronds from the Ecklonia maxima plant. As these kelp beds are left to regenerate, new forests are harvested every day. This takes place in the early morning, at low tide. Wet material is delivered to the processing plant where it is minced and pumped in 220L drums. This is sent by road transport to manufacturers of liquid fertilizers. A stabilizing agent can be supplied by the manufacturer and added to the minced material during processing in order to preserve freshness. There is no heat involved in this process.
